Item Details
Description
This piece is technically not an automaton, because its movement is driven by a crank wound by hand rather than a clockwork spring mechanism. These were called Manivelles, because in France they were powered by hand. This example shows a clown with a great face, who performs between two chairs while playing music as the crank is wound. CONDITION: There is original clothing and all original paint. There are some areas of rubs to the edges of the wood box and the edges of the chairs, but nothing that distracts from the overall great appearance. This is a large Manivelle, standing 29" tall, which is very unusual. Feature piece from the lifelong collection of Bill Howard. PROVENANCE: From the lifelong collection of Bill Howard. Condition: (Very Good) Dimensions: 23" x 14" x 8"
