Born James Earl Carter in Plains, Georgia in 1924, Carter began his career in public service in the U.S. Navy from 1946 until 1953. He remained on reserve duty until 1961, and officially transitioned into politics by 1963. He served in the Georgia State Senate, representing the 14th district, from 1963 until 1967, and served one term as Georgia's governor from 1971 - 1975. He then ascended to the Presidency in 1977, with an administration noted for its liberal policies and emphasis on international human rights. Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his continued humanitarian efforts, and is currently the longest-lived American President in history.
