Marietta Berman after 1973 created her El Cantar series of lithographs "where the line becomes the protagonist in the construction of infinite spaces and mystical atmospheres with handwritten inscriptions of biblical texts." Wikipedia. The one such work appears to be a study for that series. The Spanish text reads: '...y las aguas se partieron" -"... and the waters parted" referring to Moses parting the Red Sea in Exodus Book 14.

The other work is a gouache and is a continuation of her minimalist works.

Provenance: Private collection of the artist and thence by descent.
