His work has been described as a meticulous blend of social realism and dreamlike artistic styles. Wong's paintings often explore multi-ethnic and racial identities, exhibit cross-cultural elements, address multilingualism, and celebrate her queer sexuality. For a time in the 1980s, he made ends meet buying underappreciated antiques at Christie's and selling them at a fairer price at Sotheby's. Wong collected a large collection of graffiti while living in New York in 1989. With the help of a Japanese investor, he co-founded the American Graffiti Museum with his friend Peter Broda on Bond Street in the East Village. At the time, graffiti was a controversial art form, and much of the graffiti had already been removed from the New York subway system by the city government. In response, Wong set out to preserve what he considers "the last great art movement of the 20th century", the art of graffiti. In 1994, due to medical complications, Wong donated his graffiti collection to the Museum of the City of New York. His collection includes works by New York graffiti artists of the 1980s, including Rammellzee, Keith Haring, Futura 2000, Lady Pink, and Lee Quiñones.
