While he was still in high school, two professional artists and members of the Cowboy Artists of America, James Boren and Melvin Warren, moved to his area and made a lasting impact on his career. Under Boren's tutelage, he had his first solo show a year after graduating from high school in 1973. He has had around 30 solo shows since then. In 1995 he became a member of the Cowboy Artists of America, a lifelong dream of his, and has served on its board of directors, as president, and as director of events ever since. He has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career, including the Prix de West Purchase Award twice, the Nona Jean Hulsey Rumsey Buyers' Choice Award twice, multiple Cowboy Artist Awards, and The Briscoe Museum's Legacy Award in 2012.
