Description
Vasily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist who played a pivotal role in the development of abstract art during the early 20th century. Born in Moscow, Kandinsky initially pursued a career in law and economics before turning to art later in life.Kandinsky's artistic journey can be divided into several phases. In the early part of his career, he painted in a representational style, influenced by Russian folk art and symbolism. However, after encountering the works of the Fauvists and Post-Impressionists during a trip to Paris, he began to explore abstraction. One of Kandinsky's key contributions to modern art is his move towards abstraction, culminating in the development of a non-representational style he termed "non-objective art." He believed that art should be a spiritual experience, transcending the material world. His famous work "Composition VII" (1913) is an example of his abstract, spiritual approach to painting.Kandinsky was a founding member of the Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter) group in Munich, along with Franz Marc and other artists. The group sought to express spiritual truths through art and embraced abstraction as a means to convey inner emotions.Kandinsky also developed a theory of color and form, exploring the relationships between shapes and hues in his artworks. His book "Concerning the Spiritual in Art" (1911) outlined his theories on art and spirituality, influencing generations of artists. After the outbreak of World War I, Kandinsky returned to Russia, where he became involved in the Russian avant-garde and the early stages of the Soviet art scene. He later moved to Germany and then to France, where he continued to create art until his death in 1944.Vasily Kandinsky's impact on modern art is profound, particularly for his role in championing abstraction and emphasizing the spiritual and emotional aspects of artistic expression. His legacy endures, and his works are celebrated for their innovative use of color, form, and abstract composition.
