Description
Afro Basaldella (1912 - 1976) Italy
Gouache on Board
Measure 26"in H x 18"in W and 38"in H x 30"in W with frame
Known for: Abstract, cubist painting, murals, teaching
Biography: Afro Basaldella was born in Udine, Italy, near Venice, in 1912. His father was a decorator-painter; he was the youngest of three artist sons of the Basaldella family. Afro decided to use only his first name to distinguish himself from his two elder brothers, who were both sculptors. After studying in Venice and Florence, he went to Paris in 1931, returning to Rome in 1937. During World War II, he taught occasionally at the Venice Academy. In 1947 he settled in Rome. After passing through a Cubist phase, he evolved a personal idiom of lyrical abstraction and became one of the best-known Italian painters in this style. During the 1950s he painted murals for public buildings in Udine. He won international prizes at that time. He also taught at Mills College, California and at the Academy in Rome. Afro depended on his memory to service him with poetic imagery, finding that not only themes but colors seep in from his surroundings. For him every painting is an attempt "to come into contact with the mystery"; success depends on the artist's power. Said Afro: "If you have authority to say it, and urgency, you are no longer decorative but creative." Afro died in 1976.
