Description
This distinctive and handsome style of smooth brass eagle head is peculiar to the firms of Widmann and then Horstmann both of Philadelphia/ Horstmann succeeded Widmann after his death in 1848. Overall good solid condition but having numerous edge nicks in the blade., and grip worn and lacking twisted wire. Just the sword, no scabbard. The presence of a six pointed star on the langet is new to my experience. Blade bears a maker-s signature which I cannot quite decipher... likely a Solingen firm. This pattern is strongly associated with the Marines based on factory drawings and notes from Widmann/ Horstmann. This pattern is labeled Marine Sergeant Sword in the original 1851 Horstmann drawings.
