English and American, c. 1900. The English pair, is marked 9K with foliate line engraved temples and faceted frame and bridge, marked "J and H. T.", the other American pair circa 1890 is marked 10K with thin wire framing throughout.

From the collection of Dr. J. William Rosenthal, M.D.

Dr. Rosenthal was a well-known ophthalmologist, an expert on the history of spectacles and other visual aids, a renowned collector, an author, and a generous benefactor of many institutions. His father, Jonas W. Rosenthal, MD, is the namesake of the museum of ophthalmology at Tulane University. Optical devices from his collection can be found in over sixteen museums including the Museum of Vision of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
