Description
This is a beautiful and scarce “four-tab” beaded pipe bag from the Southern Cheyenne. The bag shows four beaded bifurcated (split) hanging sections referred to as tabs, collectors call these bags “four-tab bags” and are uncommon. The pipe bag is comprised of Indian brain-tanned hide with a yellow mineral pigment ocher dyed surface with exceptional glass trade seed beads in a classic Southern Cheyenne “bar designs”. The bag is both sinew and thread sewn. The bottom shows slightly stiffened Indian hide frilly fringes. The beadwork shows colors of greasy blue, chalk white, medium green, corn yellow, maroon and cobalt. The bottom large section is covered in beadwork along all sides and the bag shows the vertical beaded band running up both sides as well as a fancy beaded edge along each of the four-tabs. Rare design of bag in a nice, large size. Provenance: From the Tom Hardy Indianapolis collection. The hide is soft and supple, little bead loss. Well kept and displays well. Measures overall 33”L by 7.5”W.
