Verso also denotes the city of New York, #10 and a crown drawing. Mounted in a wooden frame. Canvas on stretcher measures approx. 12 1/4" height x 16 1/4" width. Measures approx. 17 1/2" height x 21 1/2" width overall including frame. Appears in overall good condition. A surrealist painter, Jorge Sanchez was a native of the Dominican Republic and received his medical degree from the University of Santo Domingo, D.R. in 1952. Upon graduation he moved to New York to specialize in gastroenterology at New York University, but in 1956 he enrolled at the National Academy of Fine Arts in New York City, where he received instruction from French and American artists including Robert Philip and Ren? Bouche. He received immediate critical acclaim at exhibitions in New York, Havana, and Santo Domingo, and later in Paris, Washington D.C., and Mexico City, and by 1959 Sanchez decided to leave medicine and focus on his artwork. The subjects of Jorge Noceda Sanchez' paintings often include flowers, harlequins, bulls, musical instruments, or abandoned buildings set in a desolate desert setting. He contrasts bold colors and hints at multiple unseen natural sources of light that cast shadows in conflicting directions. In 1959, Sanchez embarked on a world tour and exhibited in Tokyo, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Tel Aviv, Athens, Rome and at the Royal Academy in London. In 1960, he won a Gold Medal Award at the Biennial in S?o Paulo, Brazil. In 1964 the Dominican Republic appointed Sanchez Cultural Attach? of the Dominican Embassy in Tokyo. In 1966, Dr. Sanchez began became the first Dominican painter to exhibit at the Association Fraternal Latinoamericano. Sanchez later exhibited at Galleria 88 in Rome, the Federal Reserve in Washington, D.C., and galleries in New York City. Dr. Sanchez retired to Miami where he died of cancer in 1987.
