Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chimu-Inca, ca. 1000 to 1450 CE. A curved blackware vessel in the form of a catfish, the spout riding up from the fish's back. The broad head is molded with low relief whiskers around the sucker-like mouth, and the fins are etched with linear details. The river catfish lived in the murky mud and was associated with the world of the dead, which was considered an underwater world. Size: 9" L x 8" W x 4.75" H (22.9 cm x 20.3 cm x 12.1 cm)

Condition
Professionally repaired and restored. Head is reattached with infill and overpainting to breakline around the neck. Tail is repaired from several pieces with infill and overpainting to break lines. Tail tip has losses and abrasions. Loss to spout rim. Root marks on surface and root / plant material on the interior, and light earthen deposits.
