Description
3 Japanese Lacquer Trays: Kamisaka Yukichi (1886-1938), probably dating to the late 9th-early 20th century, this set of trays is an example of the fine lacquer work created by the Kamisaka family. The three trays, varying in size, have varying motifs. The middle-size and smallest in size are decorated with stylized bands of clouds and a stream.. The largest tray is decorated with a stream flowing by rocks. The inscription on the tray, "Chiyoni Yachiyoni," a phrase in the Japanese National Anthem, is based on a 10th century poem. The trays are nested in a tomobako with a top that is inscribed on the interior and exterior. The inscription on the inside, lower left: "Heian, Makie-shi, Yukichi-saku with seal, "Heian Makie artist, Yukichi made." It is speculated that the large tray may have been made by Sekka, Yukichi's brother. Provenance: Provenance: The James and Christine Heusinger Collection. Sanai Fine Art and Antiques, Garland, Texas
