Description
Carved wooden cap mask with stylized anthropomorphic head on top with tall twisted horns and painted with organic pigments. The cap mask features several zoomorphic and mask like faces , the head of the animal on top is missing, eroded away. This appears to be an Old example of an Egungun mask. The word egungun means masquerade, and these masks are used in Odun Egungun festivals, which are performed for ancestors throughout the Yoruba region, Yoruba peoples, Nigeria. The mask measures 11 x 12 inches. Provenance: A Private New Jersey collection.
