Description
A eroded old dance crest for the Egungun dances with a classical large Yoruba head with typical coif and face painted in yellow with green designs; part of lower cowl deficient, not affecting the carving. Mounted on a custom base. Egungun masks are used in conjunction with elaborate masquerade textile costumes to honour ancestors and to celebrate the positive influences of ancestral spirits on the community. During the annual festival the masqueraders become possessed by ancestor spirits with the aim of visiting their families and loved ones before journeying back to the spirit world. Provenance: A Private New York collection.
