Japanese Order of the Rising Sun Medal Grand Cross Set First Class

Item Details

Description

For your consideration is a Japanese Order of the Rising Sun (Kyokujitsusho) Grand Cross Set 1st Class. The Order was the first national decoration awarded by the Japanese government and was created on 10 April 1875 by decree of the Council of State. The badge symbolizes rays of sunlight from the rising sun. While it is the third highest order bestowed by the Japanese government, it is generally the highest ordinarily conferred order and is currently awarded to people who have rendered distinguished service to the state without regard to military achievement. However, prior to the end of World War II, it was awarded for exemplary military service.

The Sash Badge measures 87mm x 55mm and is silver partially gilt with both sides enameled and retaining original suspension ring. Sash Badge weighs 56g.

Breast Star measures 90mm in diameter with obverse enameled and reverse retaining original vertical pin and two side hooks. Breast star weighs 107g.

Japanese 4-character mark on reverse of both medals.

Provenance: Descended through the family of US ARMY COL (Ret) Howard Bressler (1918-2012), of Kileen and San Antonio, Texas.
