MARY SCHAFER: AMERICAN QUILT MAKER Pg 113: “She excelled at designing original borders that harmonized with the interior of her quilts. Whether pieced or appliquéd, Mary’s borders always ‘fit’ exactly. She was especially clever in devising symmetrical border resolutions.” Pg 128: One of four medallion quilts made by Mary Schafer in 1980. “Mary says that ‘this is an adaptation of an 1813 quilt from Pennsylvania or Delaware and housed in the Winterthur Museum.’ .. She found the inspiration for this quilt in Patsy and Myron Orlofsky’s book Quilts in America (1974, 92). The old medallion was made in 1813 with English block-printed fabrics from the 1780s.” Photo on pg 129. MARY SCHAFER AND HER QUILTS pg 45-46: Mary was inspired to explore antique medallion style quilts after Jinny Beyer’s success with her “Ray of Light” quilt, which won “Good Housekeeping” magazine’s Great Quilt Contest in 1977. Mary realized: “It is easier for me to work backward in time than to work forward.” The original quilt included embroidery and broderie perse appliqué, which Mary included in her version. Photo on pg 44. SETS AND BORDERS Pg 25: Description of quilt and photo. This quilt is from the Mary Schafer Collection.
