Description
An 18" Benin bronze figure of a queen wearing a headdress and collar of coral beads. Benin bronze figures which served as royal ornaments are the indigenous cultural art of the Benin people in the Edo State. Benin City was the center of power for the Edo people and the place of residence for the Oba, the ruler. This is a portrait of one of the queens at the Court of Benin. Benin heads were kept on altars. Every person in the court of Benin had a Queen Mother head to represent the strong female in daily life.
