A Pair of Burmese Gilt and Lacquered Buddha Disciple Sculptures
late 19th or early 20th century, carved wood painted with gold and applied with glass embellishments, representing the Buddha's chief disciples, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, the figures are depicted dressed in robes with ornate glass applique and carving, seated at ease with legs to one side, one has his hands in prayer, both look youthful and serene.

From the collection of Ambassador and Mrs. Leonard Woodcock. They lived in China from 1977 to 1981 and continued to visit frequently until 1996. Ambassador Woodcock negotiated normalization between the United States and China with leader Deng Xiaoping, and was then selected to be the first U.S. Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.

Rubbing with wear and loss to gilt; retains the majority of glass pieces, with only a few missing; repair to lower edge of front sash on one figure; some stress cracks and splitting to wood sections; some losses to edges, especially to robe hems.
