Description
Girih Batik, Indonesia, Early 20th C. This cotton piece exhibits extremely fine and intricate brushwork in three colors on an off-white ground. The design incorporates indigo and gold, reminiscent of Islamic strapwork or girih—an architectural element typically found in large two-dimensional spaces like ceilings or floors. The composition includes horizontal and vertical patterned stripes in the field, intersected by diagonal stripes connecting to octagons. Within the octagons, eight-point stars are elegantly positioned, and the spaces between the stripes are filled with geometric floral shapes, creating a visually rich and intricate design. Size: 3'6'' x 8'0'' (107 x 244 cm). Provenance: Ex Yosi Barzilai collection.
