Description
1863 Holbein Durer ART Bible Common Prayer Anglican BEAUTIFUL Woodcuts RARE
“The Book of Common Prayer” is a pivotal liturgical text in the Anglican Communion. The original version, crafted in 1549 during King Edward VIs reign, was birthed from the English Reformation and the nations break with the Roman Catholic Church. It incorporated essential English services, covering daily and Sunday worship routines, with components such as Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer, the Litany, and Holy Communion. The text also delineated ceremonies like Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, and funeral rites. This book, which also contains the Psalms for singing or recitation, has profoundly influenced Christian worship for centuries in numerous languages and denominations beyond Anglicanism. Interestingly, later editions underwent adaptations to address varying theological and societal shifts, with the 1662 version emerging as the Church of Englands authoritative rendition.
This particular edition is beautifully decorated with artistic embellishments by Hans Holbein throughout and an exquisite frontispiece by Albrecht Durer. It also showcases an allegorical image of Queen Elizabeth I.
