John Dix Interesting ALS

A letter of recommendation signed by General John A. Dix and John L. Broome. 2pp of a bifolium, measuring 5" x 8", New York, dated November 11, 1864. Signed "John A. Dix" and addressed to Simon Draper Esq., the letter makes a plea on behalf of William H. Broome to retain his position at the Custom House. At the conclusion of the letter, Broome's brother, Lt. Col. John L. Broome, adds his own endorsement. With flattened mail folds, light toning, and soiling. Some staining to the verso. Bold and large signatures, only slightly smudged from folding. Overall very fine.

In full:

"Mr. Wm H. Broome is a clerk in the Custom House. He is a son-in-law of Commodore Boarman of the Navy, and I am assured in all respects worthy of his position, which he wishes to retain. His family is one of the most respectable in the State and I take pleasure of recommending him to you for retention...John. A. Dix."

"I fully concur in the above and think that my brother may be retained in his position in the Custom House. John L. Broome."

John A. Dix (1798-1879) served as a Union general during the Civil War and is well known for having played a key role in suppressing the New York Draft Riots of 1863. He served for a brief period as Secretary of the Treasury under President Buchanan before Lincoln was inaugurated, and after the war became U.S. Minister to France and later Governor of New York.

Lieutenant Colonel John Lloyd Broome, (1824–1898) was an officer in the United States Marine Corps during the American Civil War. His brother, William Henry Broome, served as the deputy collector of the New York Custom House and married Mary Jane Boarman, the daughter of Commodore Charles Boarman.
