First edition in English.First edition in English of the great scientific encyclopedia of antiquity. Written in the first century of the Christian era, Pliny‘s ”Naturalis Historia” was essentially the highest authority for centuries on subjects relating to botany, zoology, geography, mineralogy, pharmacology, etc. Holland is generally considered the greatest translator of the Elizabethan age, and Lowndes calls this book ”A work of immense labour, and what few men of his time could have executed in a superior manner.” Bookplate. Light rubbing to binding extremities, top inch of front joint cracked; title-page mounted, several expert paper repairs, occasional light marginal dampstain or slight worming; overall an attractive copy.
