WASHINGTON, DC STONEWARE ADVERTISING JUGS, LOT OF TWO, Bristol-slip with upper Albany-slip type glaze, each with applied handle, comprising a square form example with medium neck and mouth with spout and one example with ringed mouth. Each having printed stamp to front including one with "YOU ARE NOT LEFT / "Not by a Jug Full." / COMPLIMENTS OF / LUKE J. KEARNEY / CHRISTMAS 1900." and remaining having "'IS EVERYBODY HAPPY' / CHRISTMAS 1906 / LUKE J. KEARNEY, / 1811 L. STREET N. W. / WASHINGTON, D. C." Dated 1900 and 1906. 4 1/8" and 5 3/8" HOA.
Catalogue Note: Luke J. Kearney (1866-1933) was born in Washington, DC to Irish immigrant parents. He was reported as working in the restaurant or saloon business in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census records. The present vessels were holiday gifts provided for clientele. From 1900 to 1907, the small whiskey jugs not only provided a few warming nips, each also exhibited a new slogan. Kearney died in 1933 at the age of 67 and is buried with his family at Holy Rood Cemetery in Washington, DC. For further information on Kearney follow this link:
