WASHINGTON, DC STONEWARE MINIATURE ADVERTISING JUGS, LOT OF TWO, each having Bristol-slip with upper Albany-slip type glaze, comprising one example with wire bail handle and one example having applied rounded handle. Each having printed stamp to front including one with "WEDDERBURN'S / PURE WINES & LIQUORS / WASHINGTON, D.C. / ARE ALL guaranteed under the / Pure Food & Drugs Act. / June 30, 1906." and one with "COMPLIMENTS OF / T. A. SONNEMAN / 3RD & FLA: AVE., N.W. / WASHINGTON, D.C." Late 19th/early 20th century. 3 1/4" and 4" HOA.
Catalogue Note: John Wedderburn was born in Washington, DC in 1869. The family had deep roots in America and was purportedly able to trace their lineage back to George Washington. Wedderburn's life was anything but ordinary. His actions as a lawyer got him disbarred in 1897, which led to a new money-making venture in the early 20th century, liquor sales.
