Ignatius dOhsson was an 18th-century Istanbul-born historian who is best-known for his studies of the Ottoman Empire. Fluent in Arabic and Turkish, dOhsson was able to write some of the most detailed first-hand accounts of life in Turkish courts under Sultan Selim II and Selim III, with descriptions of customs, mosques, and even seraglios (harems). Journal des Savants report of this book is the most telling:
“The best description that we have had of the Ottoman Empire, by a person from the country itself”
This second volume from the 1788 first edition contains notable descriptions of Muslim prayer customs as well as an illustrated portrayal of the minaret muezzin.
