Description
A carved wooden shrine idol with strong facial features, inverted central animal horn and adorned with metal tacks and reptile hide. Such idols are commissioned by the village shaman priest or the nganga, who assembled the bishimba, powerful matter made of animal, plant, and mineral substances. The addition of this sacred matter allowed the nkishi to become a conduit for spiritual forces. Songye peoples, DRC/ Congo, central Africa. The sculpture measures 11.5 inches tall on its 3 x 3 inch wooden base. provenance: Ex Sam Hilu collection, New York, also a private New Jersey collection.
