Description
(1738-1800) German officer in the American Revolution. Riedesel commanded the Braunschweiger Jager regiment (called ‘Hessians’) and all German and American Indian forces in the Saratoga Campaign, distinguishing himself at Ticonderoga. Riedesel and his wife were captured when Gen. John Burgoyne surrendered, and he was imprisoned with the Convention Army in Charlottesville, Virginia. After his exchange for Gen. William Thompson, the Baron commanded troops on Long Island in the winter of 1780-81. Extremely rare, fine content A.D. (unsigned), 28pp. legal folio, [n.p., n.d.], in French. Titled ‘Comparison of The Modern and Ancient Greeks’, this treatise, possibly written as a student, sets forth a detailed exposition of the two eras of the culture, replete with incredible detail about each, a historiography, examples of ancient Greek script, the role of Constantinople in the development of Greek culture, and more. WITH: an unsigned A.D. 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], in French titled ‘Supplement’, in extreme small part: ‘…I evaluated the annual Commerce of France raised to 5 Million Livres of clear profit. Here are my calculations and report! The entire annual [commerce] by merchants is 80-90 Million from the East, [in sales of] silk, wool, bolts of raw cotton, rolls of shirt thread…[imported] from Marseille, not including…small bits of Commerce by the Captains…’. He concludes: ‘In toto, the commerce is perhaps [?] to indoor farming, and together it could expand and become a Monopoly in France’s favor as well as the other Nations of Europe, if the Minister of France does not stop it [with] obstacles?...’. Both documents toned, light marginal soiling and wear, otherwise boldly and clearly penned. Worthy of full transcription and additional research!
