Description
A carved wooden ceremonial mask embellished with numerous cowrie shells, seeds , mirrors set into some type of resin or tree sap. The mask has the tall traditional comb like finial and appears to have much field use and wear. According to the MET museum website, Ntomo is one of many associations historically found in communities identified as Bamana, and its membership has usually consisted of young boys in the process of learning adult responsibilities. Not every Bamana community has always maintained or continues to maintain an Ntomo association, so the phenomenon is neither universal nor timeless. This mask measures 30 x 9.5 inches. A metal display stand can also be included for an additional $50.00. Provenance: Ex Eugene & harriet Becker collection, New York, also a private New jersey collection.
