Oceania, Polynesia, Pacific Islands, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden tapa beater bearing elaborately incised linear motifs across each face. The handle end exhibits incredibly smooth surfaces, and the pommel depicts an abstract face incised with additional decorative striations. This tool was used to flatten and smooth the rough tapa bark fibers before making traditional, wearable cloth. Size: 14.5" L x 1.375" W (36.8 cm x 3.5 cm)
Provenance: Private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection, acquired from Morning Star Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA in 2000
