Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Admiralty / Bismarck Archipelago, Manus Island, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A rare obsidian-bladed knife (known locally as a gudom or katjo) with a paranarium nut resin handle, etched and colored with earthy red, charcoal, and lime powder pigments. The knapped blade is double-edged, coming to a pointed tip. Obsidian is naturally found on the Admiralty Islands, particularly on Lou and Manus Islands and prized for its razor sharp properties. Size: 9.5" L x 1.5" W (24.1 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired before 2004
