Original gallery tag from R.H. Love Galleries Inc. (Chicago, IL) on verso. A quintessential painting depicting Gruppe's signature style which he taught in his school of painting in Massachusetts. Dimensions: 23"h x 27"w x 1.25"d (framed). In good vintage condition consistent with age. Provenance: From a private estate, who purchased the painting from R.H. Love Gallery, and the current owner inherited the painting from their family. This painting does not have supplementary authentication paperwork. An accredited appraiser reviewed the painting and considered it to be authentic, but with the lack of provenance provided we cannot confirm authenticity, which is reflected in the reserve pricing. Emile Albert Gruppe (1896-1978) was an American painter, known for impressionistic landscapes and Massachusetts coastal and marine paintings. His permanent studio was in Gloucester, MA where he was a member of the Cape Ann school of artists. He ran the Gloucester School of Painting at Rocky Neck, on Smith Cove in Gloucester, Massachusetts from 1940-1970. Today, Gruppe is among one of the most prominent Rockport artists and this group of artists have steadily exceeded and risen in value at auction.
