Item Details
Description
A romantic Impressionist figurative oil painting on canvas titled "Girl with a Yellow Hat" by American artist Lawton Parker. Circa late 1800s to early 1900s. Original gallery tag from R.H. Love Galleries Inc. (Chicago, IL) on verso. A lovely "en plein air" portrait that is bright and light, giving a sense of optimism to the viewer. This is further emphasized with the yellow hat and this color symbolizes joy and happiness. Dimensions: 21"h x 25.25"w x 2.5"d (framed). In good vintage condition consistent with age. Provenance: From a private estate, who purchased the painting from R.H. Love Gallery, and the current owner inherited the painting from their family. This painting does not have supplementary authentication paperwork. An accredited appraiser reviewed the painting and considered it to be authentic, but with the lack of provenance provided we cannot confirm authenticity, which is reflected in the reserve pricing. Lawton Parker (1868-1954) studied at the Art Institute of Chicago beginning in 1886. He traveled to France and studied at the ecole des Beaux-Arts. For a time, he was associated with the Giverny art colony and adopted an impressionist style. After returning to the United States, in 1892 he was appointed professor at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts. He became director of art at Beloit College in 1893, and president of the New York School of Art in 1898-99. Beginning 1903, he resided in Chicago and taught at the Art Institute. He received the silver medal at the Saint Louis Exposition in 1904; gold medals at the International Exposition, Munich, in 1905, and at the Paris Salon in 1913 (the first American so honored); and was awarded the medal of honor at the Panama--;Pacific International Exposition in 1915. Parker was also the president of the Rodin Studios corporation, which developed an artists' cooperative housing of the same name in New York City.
