Item Details
Description
A modern Impressionist landscape oil painting on canvas titled "On the Beach, Bodega Headlands" by American artist Selden Conner Gile. Circa early 1900s. Original gallery tag from R.H. Love Galleries Inc. (Chicago, IL) on verso. A lovely "en plein air" seascape that is classic and timeless. Gile preferred to complete paintings outdoors usually in one sitting. Dimensions: 15.75"h x 19.75"w x 1.5"d (framed). In good vintage condition consistent with age. Provenance: From a private estate, who purchased the painting from R.H. Love Gallery, and the current owner inherited the painting from their family. It is noted on the verso, "acquired by Mrs. Jonas von Resen, Belvedere, California, in the 1930s, and descended though the family." This painting does not have supplementary authentication paperwork. An accredited appraiser reviewed the painting and considered it to be authentic, but with the lack of provenance provided we cannot confirm authenticity, which is reflected in the reserve pricing. Selden Conner Gile (1877-1947) was an American painter who was mainly active in northern California between the early-1910s and the mid-1930s. He was the founder and leader of the Society of Six, a Bay Area group of artists known for their plein-air paintings and rich use of color, a quality that would later figure into the work of Bay Area figurative expressionists. Most of Gile's paintings until about 1927 are small canvases featuring California landscapes and coastline. Stylistically, along with the vivid colors, Gile would use thick paint, "...applying loose, expressive brushstrokes of varying sizes." Today, his art can be found in private and public institutions including the Smithsonian.
