Virginia Resident Pays Taxes on Lot and Watch

This pre-printed tax receipt for Frederick County, Virginia, includes slaves, although John S. Miller apparently did not own any. He paid $1.36 for taxes on his watch and lot, for which F. R. Milton gave this receipt.

F. R. Milton (b. 1821) was born in Virginia. In 1850, he lived in Winchester, Virginia.

John Samuel Miller (1811-1863) was born in Virginia. In 1843, he married Jane Forster Schmidt (1818-1855). In 1850, he lived in Frederick County, Virginia, where he owned $7,000 in real estate. In 1860, he was a merchant in Winchester, Virginia, where he owned real estate worth $15,000 and personal property worth $15,000.
