Description
A 2pp manuscript document comprised of a double-sided account ledger page, presumably once part of a personal property tax list or tax survey. Various entries all date from Spring 1853. N.p. Each entry is signed by a municipal official, usually one J.W. Etheridge. Expected wear including toning, scattered moderate stains, minor ink bleed-through, slightly chipped edges, and flattened folds. Else good to very good. 6" x 15."
The pages list twelve taxpayers along with their taxable assets. Townspeople came from different social classes, from the poor or subsistent (listed as only "1 poll" or a standard head tax) to the more affluent (those possessing a clock, buggy, or even bank interest.) The wealthiest person on the tax list is Bennet Driver, who owned 360 acres of land and a total of seventeen slaves of all ages.
Bennet Driver's entry from May 24, 1853, reads in part:
"Bennet Driver
+ 1 Clock
+ 6 Slaves under 5 years Old
+ 2 " between 5 + 10 " "
+ 4 " " 10 + 15 " "
+ 2 " " 15 + 30 " "
+ 3 " " 30 + 40 " "
360 acres of land No. not known
all worth $800…"
