Description
Ancient Egypt, Pre-Dynastic Period, Naqada II to III, ca. 3500 to 3100 BCE. A beautiful mace head carved from brecciated limestone with a wide hafting shaft drilled through the center of the dense body. The apple-shaped weapon would have been mounted atop a lengthy wooden pole and used by swinging said pole with force, causing immense damage to whatever - or whomever - the stone head contacted. Size: 2.62" L x 2.57" W x 1.96" H (6.7 cm x 6.5 cm x 5 cm)
A similar example of spherical form hammered for $3000 at Christie's, New York "Antiquities" auction (sale 3403, December 11, 2014, lot 23).
Provenance: private Carroll collection, Georgia, USA, by descent; ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, acquired 1960s

Condition
Very light abrasions and nicks, with some small chips around base of hafting hole, otherwise intact and excellent. Wonderful surface smoothness throughout.
