Description
Ancient Egyptian large Limestone Head of a King. Size Height: 9 1/2 in. (24 cm). An ancient Egyptian limestone head of an early Ptolemaic king wearing the royal striped nemes headdress with a uraeus. Ptolemaic period.Ca. 4th Centry BC - early 3rd Centry BC. The Ptolemaic kings were Greeks who ruled in Egypt during the Hellenistic period. The Ptolemaic dynasty was the last dynasty of ancient Egypt, and was established in 305 BC, when one of Alexander the Great's generals, Ptolemy, became Ptolemy I of Egypt. Egyptian art during the Ptolemaic period reflects a combination of Egyptian traditions with forms and styles of Greek art. The early Ptolemies visually emphasized their role as traditional Egyptian kings through stylistic continuities. Cf. Metropolitan Museum of Art inv. no. 41.6.1. Provenance: Private NYC collection, brought to USA prior to 1948, to present owner by descent. A copy of the provenance documents accompanied the purchase of the lot.
