Raymond Abner was born in Cairo in 1919. He studied engineering between 1937 and 1939 but at the age of 20 he began to focus on art and began his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Cairo in 1941 and finished in 1943. He took lessons at the St. Martin's School of London, UK from 1945-1947, after which he moved to Paris, France to work with various studios. In Paris he met the grandson of Henri Matisse, who introduced him to his illustrious grandfather which heavily influenced the young Abner. From this meeting, he was led to meet with Fernand Leger and began working in the artist's atelier in Pigalle, which later led to his introduction with the famed gallerist Daniel Henry Kahnweiler. Throughout his life, Raymond Abner rose to meet each opportunity with his strong character and will, proving himself both as a figurative and abstract painter.
