Description
American crazy quilt, likely southern, dated 1897. Hand pieced and hand embroidered. Rendered with primarily solid color utilitarian wool and wool challis fabrics, possibly dress cutaways, as well as fabrics with decorative woven patterns. Motifs and edge stitching are embroidered in wool; designs including flowers, butterflies, animals, musical instruments, a harness racing scene, a bicycle, as well as phrases "Honor Thy Father and Mother" and "Make Peace at Home". Many embroidery designs appear to be original, but some may be inspired by specific imagery like the "Old Abe" eagle, visible next to rooster. Mustard color borders with velvet squares to corners. Top is bound to backing, which has cotton robe print in a distinctive leaf print pattern, with knife edge stitch. 73" H x 66 1/2" W.
Condition
Overall good condition, wear commensurate with age. Scattered minor losses to fabric and embroidery. Few darker stains to backing, largest 3" L. Area of minor bleeding to red dye on backing, near one corner, approximately 8" L.
