Description
Oil on linen laid to masonite depicting a Hutsul on horseback in a village on the way to his wedding. This image is one of several versions we have seen, varying as to the time or year, colors of the clothing, the addition of animals or buildings, and other details. Signed lower left. Fine craquelure in the area of the sky. Very minor touch-ups to trim of woman's cap and buttons on the clothing of the rider show under black light. Back of masonite covered with paper to which is glued an old typed notation in German: "Szerner, Wladislw, Maler, gab. 1836 in Warschau, thatig in Munchen. Von ihm zur Hochzeit reitende Huzulinen, etc." Painting, approx. 16 1/8" x 13 1/4". Frame approx. 21 1/4" x 18 1/4".
