[OTIS, George A.] A Report on Amputations at the Hip-Joint in Military Surgery. Washington, DC, 1867. With 9 inserted full page plates (5 chromolithographs, 4 b/w lithographs - several by Bien.) A graphic and detailed report which was issued as part of the Barne's Medical and Surgical History of the Civil War. Doctors Barnes and Otis both received their medical degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. Brev. Lieut. Colonel Otis directed his report to Surgeon General of the Army Barnes, "In accordance with your instructions, I have examined how far the experience acquired in the War of the Rebellion has augmented our data for estimating the value of the operation of amputation at the hip-joint as a resource in military surgery, and have embodied the results of that inquiry into the following report... this report will consequently be divided into an historical summary, an account of individual cases, a citation of the options of surgeons, and a discussion of results."
