[CIVIL WAR]. Civil War letters and ephemera associated with Ohio, plus.


Three week diary of Byron Stoddard (1825-1865), Hillsboro, Ohio, spanning 28 May 1864 through 19 June 1864, inscribed on front pastedown "B. Stoddard, Hillsboro O / May 28th 1864." 15pp of entries, plus several pages of additional notes. Stoddard describes his daily activities but includes references to the ongoing war, particularly to Grant's forces in Virginia and to Morgan's Raid. 9 June 1864: "Morgan is in Ky with an army of 3 or 4000 men scatered [sic] through the state in the form of Guerillas, the Times says that they are in Maysville..." He continues noting that a regiment from Camp Dennison has been ordered to Kentucky "to meet the Rebs who are traversing the state under the Command of Morgan." Additional entries describe the raid, one stating on 13 June that "Morgan is causing so much trouble by capturing our home guards who were sent out to take him." 

[With:] A small archive of letters related to the Beane family of Preble County, Ohio, with 1 letter dated 7 August 1864 from Sergeant George Beane (1835-1864, listed as Bean in HDS), 44th MO Infantry, KIA at Franklin, TN, describing scouting for rebel bushwhackers and rebel atrocities in Missouri: "for instance such as putting powder into the line mens ears and touching it off, and strapping a man to a slab and putting him alive into the firey furnace of a steam saw mill for no other offence that being a union man, such things have been done in Missouri since this rebellion began ..." (rodent damage on letter affecting text). -- A small archive of documents associated with Private Abner Wood Dill (1843-1914), Co. E, 4th Independent Battalion, Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. His papers include a Certificate of Service, pension documents, a "Survivor's Association" pamphlet from the 1898 GAR National Encampment at Cincinnati, and cancelled post-war checks relating to his occupation as a blacksmith. Also with a black "In Memoriam" ribbon from the W.R. Hoel Post, No. 230, Waynesville, Ohio, and a 4th Independent Battalion O.V.C. , Survivors Association badge.

[With:] A group of Civil War-era documents including discharge papers, letters, and other ephemera from various Ohio soldiers or soldiers with Ohio connections, as well as homefront letters from friends and family. Letter groupings include soldiers' letters from Sergeant David H. Clifton, 121st OVI; Private James Dunlap, 120th OVI, with Siege of Vicksburg content; and Sergeant Jesse Espy, 62nd PA Infantry.

[With:] Approx. 27 non-consecutive pages from a ledger documenting Ordnance Stores and other accounting for Co. L, Ohio 6th Cavalry, February through May 1865.

[Also with:] A group of 13 lithographs depicting Civil War figures, each measuring approx. 12 1/4 x 16 in. (conditions vary, many with some soil, toning, dampstaining, wear, losses especially at edgeline, disbound). Published by Cincinnati firms Gibson & Co. and Ehrgott, Forbriger & Co., the figures include, in part: Lincoln, Davis, Grant, Hooker, Rosencrans, Butler, Halleck, Stanton.
