Including one written by a Union camp soldier: "We have a free American of African descent: who cooks and washes for us", "My company is now reduced to 19 men present for duty", "I am glad you like McClellan, he is my General. You know I served under him in Western Virginia"; and a letter dated Jan 4h 1859, one brother writing to another: "In your arguments, you seemed to overlook the fact that if Negros were allowed to vote, they have the same right to be chosen to the office. Now would you like to see a negro of "Color" President of the U.S.A.".
