Description

[REVOLUTIONARY WAR]. Northampton Mercury. Vol LXIV, Nos. 30-33. London, 29 Sept. - 20 Oct. 1783.

Northampton Mercury. Vol LXIV, Nos. 30-33. London, England: Thomas Dicey & Co., 29 September - 20 October 1783.

A group of 4 issues containing the complete printing of the Peace of Paris of 1783, the treaties that ended the Revolutionary War.

A group of 4 issues, each 4pp., folio, 12 x 18 in. Disbound (each partially separated at central fold, chipping, short tears, and some loss at edges, light staining to margins, each issue with ink stamp lower right on p. 1).

Four consecutive newspapers, dated 29 September, 6, 13, and 20 October 1783, print the complete text of the four peace treaties ending the Revolutionary War, collectively referred to as the Peace of Paris.

On 3 September 1783, representatives of King George III of Great Britain signed a treaty in Paris with representatives of the United States of America—commonly known as the Treaty of Paris (1783)—and two treaties at Versailles with representatives of King Louis XVI of France and King Charles III of Spain—commonly known as the Treaties of Versailles (1783). The previous day, a preliminary treaty had been signed with representatives of the States General of the Dutch Republic. These treaties dictated that the British would lose their Thirteen Colonies and marked the end of the First British Empire. Three of the treaties (between Great Britain and France, Spain, and the United States) are printed on the back pages of these newspapers, while the treaty between Great Britain and the Dutch Republic is printed on the front page.
