Description
"Lovers: Love in Motion Pictures" by Linda Sunshine, published by Turner Publishing, Atlanta, Georgia, 1992. Stated First Edition, First Printing with '1' present in the line on copyright page; illustrated.

Un-clipped dust jacket with original price of $27.50 on the front flap; hard boards, blue cloth with silvery lettering on spine, 9" x 9.1/8"; decorated endpapers, 204 pages including index, illustrated with 232 monochrome photographs; near fine condition.

"Throughout the history of the movies, certain couples have captured our imagination. "Lovers" is a rare and vibrant celebration of the actors and actresses who have personified and glorified our romantic fantasies over the last 6 decades: Garbo and Gilbert, Gable and Harlow, Crawford and Gable, Astaire and Rogers, Loy and Powell, MacDonald and Eddy, Flynn and De Havilland, Garland and Rooney, Garson and Pidgeon, Bogart and Bacall, Leigh and Olivier, Taylor and Burton, Newman and Woodward, Hepburn and Tracy, Allen and Keaton, and Allen and Farrow. Includes 232 extraordinary movie stills; some never before seen in print, all lavishly reproduced in B & W duotone."

"Movies," observes the jacket-flap copy of this lavishly illustrated not-quite-oversize volume, "shape our ideas about love and romance...[As] Woody Allen says, "You're always trying to get things to come out perfectly in art because it's real difficult in life." The essential elements of a great romantic team "include equality of the sexes, a single romantic ideal, and that elusive star quality," all of which were part of the sixteen couples studied herein.

Linda Sunshine divides her teams into three groups: lovers on screen, lovers offscreen, and lovers on and off screen- although the latter two rather tend to blur, since the "offscreen" pairs also appeared together in several notable pictures each. The onscreen couples each represent a particular aspect of screenly love: temptation (Garbo and Gilbert), lust (Gable and Harlow), glamour (Crawford and Gable), elegance and class (Astaire and Rogers), sophistication (Loy and Powell), sentimental love (Macdonald and Eddy), adventure (Flynn and deHavilland), good clean fun (Garland and Rooney), and enduring love (Garson and Pidgeon). The other two groups include Bogie and “his baby” Bacall, Leigh and Olivier, Taylor and Burton, Newman and Woodward, Hepburn and Tracy, Allen and Keaton, Allen and Farrow. Appearing together in from three to eleven classic films that date from 1926 to 1990, they portray love comic, serious, and tragic.

Each chapter traces the history of the team, how they were first paired, their relationship on and off camera, something of the movies in which they appeared, and their ultimate fates, garnished with dozens of quotes and stunning black-and-white film and publicity stills. (The only really glaring omission is of Gable and Leigh, who to many viewers, in "Gone With the Wind," created the definitive romantic couple.) If you like movie romance, or even just (like me) classic film, this book should be on your shelf." [a review]
