Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu-Inca, 14th to 16th century CE. A charming mold-made bird effigy stirrup vessel with pale beige pigments slipped over the orange surface. Ducks were revered birds in ancient Peru, since this fowl was at home both on water and the sky / celestial realm. The Muscovy duck is the oldest domesticated duck species, first bred by early Pre-Columbian cultures and kept by Chimu and Inca people for meat and eggs. This vessel has stylistic aspects that suggest it may have been created by a Chimu artisan under Inca rule. Size: 8.5" L x 4" W x 7" H (21.6 cm x 10.2 cm x 17.8 cm)
