Description
Magna Graecia, southern Italy, near Ignazia, Apulia, ca. 325 BCE. A very fine pottery pouring vessel known as an epichysis, possessing a characteristically spool-shaped base with a slender spout and long, raised looping handle, with applied matching animal heads (perhaps lions?) adorning the areas where the upper handle end meets the spout, all decorated in Gnathian technique with grape vines in fugitive white and yellow-orange paint, a red striation between the grape clusters and leaves above, white rays at the lower neck and on shoulder above spool. Three small decorative elements on front of spool section. Size: 3.75" W x 6.75" H (9.5 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Howard T. Knapp collection, acquired from the 1960s - 1980s
