Description
A large carved wooden slit drum or idiophone used in traditional villages as a security system. Specific patterns were played to communicate to others who was on duty patrolling the village, which give a sense of security to village residents at nighttime. The kentongan also functioned as a musical rhythmic instrument. The drum measures 28 x 9.5 x 7 inches. Java , Indonesia. Provenance: A Private Pennsylvania collection.
Condition
Good, very well handled and worn, old minor stress fracture in the wood repaired with old nail.
