The former American President John Quincy Adams was well acquainted with General Lafayette. So much so that following his death, Adams gave a famous speech to Congress on the life and character of Lafayette. This oration was given to commemorate Lafayettes most important contributions to American liberty. This speech also provides details on Lafayettes influence on the American Revolution.
This 1835 edition includes an appendix which prints the proceedings initiated by Adams on 21 June 1834
“to consider and report by what token of respect and affection it may be proper for the Congress of the United States to express the deep sensibility of the Nation to the event of the decease of General Lafayette.”
